The Empress and The Pearl
Theatre Too
2800 Routh Street Dallas
An intriguing, fictionalized account of an encounter between rock star Janis Joplin and legendary blues singer Bessie Smith, The Empress and The Pearl receives its world premiere at Dallas' Theatre Too. Set in a lonely hotel room, a dejected Joplin is visited by the spirit of Smith, her biggest inspiration. The emotional story progresses through music and dialogue, revealing just how important both women were to the legacy of rock 'n' roll. Smith, who's played by local favorite Denise Lee, blazed her trail by becoming the highest-paid black performer of the 1920s, earning her the nickname "Empress of the Blues," while Joplin became known as "The Pearl" after the impact of her second album, entitled Pearl. Together, both artists form a unique view of music history.
